Amy reveals her secrets on color and the latest trends

Welcome to the World of Color! We’re kicking off The Design Edit’s first edition, our monthly newsletter, and couldn’t be more excited to share with you all things color.

Are you asking yourself “What color should I paint my walls?” or “What’s the best color to add in my accessories and artwork?” This is a common question that almost everyone faces in the process of trying to make their home feel more their own. After all, it’s your backdrop for living!

But, did you know that color can change the way you feel in a space? This adds a significance to the importance of choosing the right color! Just as you associate the beach with a calming mood or the sunshine with a happy mood, the colors you see in these settings can be used in your space to reflect the same mood. Read more about the basics of color psychology in our blog Adding Color to Your Space Creates Feelings. There are some handy tips to consider as you make this hard (but fun) decision!

The hottest trend of 2023 that's stealing the spotlight: BOLD colors! From bathrooms covered floor to ceiling in colored tiles, to moody rooms with painted walls and matching drapery, there is one thing in common - color is IN!

Here are some of my fav inspirations shots of the moment!

The beauty of color lies in its incredible versatility. You can have the same accent color as your friend, but your spaces will look totally different and reflect your own style because of how versatile color is!

Color Prediction Alert: In 2024 you will start to see Cobalt Blue as a bold color choice.

Ever wondered how a good Interior Designer is able to get all the details just right? With intentionality!

Scale is another design secret for setting the stage of how a space feels, and if you’re not intentional about it, it will go all wrong. A common one is high ceilings make your room feel bigger, and vice versa for low ceilings. Furniture that’s too big for your space will make your room feel cramped, while furniture that’s too small looks like you’re living in a doll house.

A few insider tips to use scale to your advantage.

  1. Rather than hanging your drapery rod right above the window trim, move it up and get longer drapes! A great rule of thumb is take the wall space above your window and split it in half. At that midway point is where you should mount your rod. (Or for maximum drama, mount the rod as close to the ceiling as possible and make sure your drapery just barely touches the floor.)

  2. When choosing a side table, measure the arm height of the sofa or chair it’s going next to. That’s the height of the table you should look for (give or take 1-2” in either direction). When your table to too short (or too tall) it throws off the scale of the other piece of furniture!

  3. When it comes to table lamps, bigger is better. An appropriate sized lamp is so important to adding scale and layers to your space. In general, look for lamps that are 22” tall or more! Ideally, the middle of the shade should be around your eye level when sitting next to the table lamp.
