Color predictions for 2025 and the importance of ceilings in your design. In this edition of The Design Edit, our monthly newsletter, learn about the two parts that every good design includes.

Do you ever have that feeling that your room is missing that “wow factor”? As an experienced interior designer, I’ve seen how a neglected ceiling can leave a space feeling incomplete. Take a minute and look up… your ceiling is probably just an expansive white surface right now, right?

What if I told you that this is your room’s fifth wall and it has the power to totally transform your entire room just by giving it a little love? Here are “5 Cool Ideas to Make a Statement on Your Ceiling: Elevate Your Space with These Design Secrets” and discover how a few creative touches above can make a big difference down below.

Using color in spaces is one of my favorite things, especially with paint, so when the color of the year predictions start coming out, I get excited to see what upcoming trends might be in store.  The major paint brands have already started weighing in, and their predictions give us a lot to think about—and maybe even a little inspiration to get a head start on a fresh coat of paint!

Behr is betting on "Rumors". It reminds me of a nice glass of cabernet. That deep, velvety red, full of character and warmth. This color is like a cabernet that’s been kissed by the perfect sunset, where the warmth and depth of the wine are translated into a color that feels both luxurious and inviting. It's the kind of shade that makes a room feel like it has a secret waiting to be discovered. It’s perfect for those who love the "soft luxury" trend where you get the best of both worlds: luxurious and inviting, yet earthy and authentic.

Meanwhile, Sherwin-Williams has a different idea. They’re leaning towards "Quietude", a soft, blue green that practically whispers “relax.” It’s a warm take on seafoam green and it’s giving me those serene sea glass vibes. This shade feels like a gentle embrace from nature, perfect for wrapping a room in tranquility. Ideal for creating a peaceful retreat, this soothing hue invites you to kick off your shoes, unwind, and pause the hustle of everyday life.

Now, while I love the thought of rich, velvety ruby and serene seafoam greens, I have my own prediction for 2025: a deeper, more saturated green is on the horizon. We’re going to see it come out more in kitchens and furniture. Green is nature’s jack-of-all-trades. It pairs well with others and makes a statement on its own. It connects us back to nature, adds a little zen, and has the ability to refresh us. Think about how alive you feel when you take a fresh breath of air on a crisp fall morning. What I love about green is that it’s invigorating and restful, making it ideal for creating spaces that feel stylish, grounded, and refreshingly alive.

So, will 2025 be all about the warm, cozy vibes of a bold red, the calming influence of a gentle green, or the dynamic depth of an earthy green? Only time will tell! But one thing's for sure: whatever color you choose, it’s about creating a space that feels uniquely yours. So, what will your color of 2025 be?

Great design is all about the details, so don't be afraid to look up and think outside the box.

I’m going to share a secret with you - it’s never ok to use only one brand in your home. Sure, I love CB2 and could literally fill my entire house with it. But, what will be lacking is that touch of creativity and uniqueness.

If you’re looking for something to really make your home unique, you have to do something unexpected, bold and creative. Furniture and accessories are vital, of course, but unless you’re designing completely custom things, you’re working with the same options as everyone else. So as you’re reading this, you’re probably thinking… well crap, how can I stand out?

Every good design has 2 parts: Beautiful things & Creativity.

Mix and match brands, styles, colors, textures, and focus on creative details that infuse personality and uniqueness into your space. One of my favorite ways to bring creativity into your space in an often overlooked way - the Ceiling. Here are some of my favorite ceiling design options.

  • Go Beyond White: Experiment with Sheen and Finish. While color is often the focus when it comes to ceilings, the finish and sheen of the paint can be just as important. Consider using a high-gloss finish on your ceiling to reflect light and create a mirror-like effect. This technique works particularly well in smaller rooms or spaces with limited natural light, as it can make the room feel more expansive and bright.

  • Layered Paint Effects: Think Ombre Ceilings. Why settle for one solid color when you can create a stunning ombre or gradient effect on your ceiling? This technique involves blending two or more colors to create a seamless transition from one hue to another, adding a sense of depth and movement to your space.

  • Decorative Ceiling Medallions: A Modern Twist on a Classic. Ceiling medallions are a classic architectural element, but you can give them a modern twist by using them in unexpected ways. Instead of just one medallion around a chandelier, consider clustering smaller medallions or panels across the ceiling to create a unique pattern or design.

  • Wallcoverings on the Ceiling: A Stylish Surprise. Using wallpaper on the ceiling might seem like an obvious choice, but it's a design move that often goes overlooked. Wallcoverings can add pattern, color, and texture to a ceiling in a way that paint simply can’t match, creating a standout feature in any room.
