Cheers to 2024 & these Home Design Trends!
Plus tips on how to add them into your space.
2024 Trend Alert! In this edition of The Design Edit, our monthly newsletter, we’ll discuss the newest trends for the year and ways you can add those to your own home.
The New Year is here and with that usually comes some new resolutions, a little purging, and the task of getting yourself (and your home) organized. I like to think of resolutions as newly formed habits, because habits tend to be smaller actionable things that are easier to stay committed to. Inside the home, some habits may be things like making your bed every morning, fluffing the sofa pillows every evening, or lighting a candle every day to get that perfect ‘at home’ scent throughout the house. The thing about habits over resolutions is, once you start and they become a part of your daily life, it’s natural to keep going. For me a big habit is organization and decluttering, and probably like you, I also have room for improvement!
What better time to highlight these Storage Solutions: Creative Ways to Declutter and Organize from our blog archives with 7 functional and aesthetic ideas to help you stay on track with your new habit of organization! I bet you’ll find something that you’ve never thought of before when it comes to keeping your home tidy.
Trends come and go, and when making design decisions for yourself, it’s important to ask yourself “Am I fully committed to this design choice, even if it goes ‘out of style’ in 2 years?”. Of course, as a designer, I use items considered trendy in spaces I design, but I lean harder into classical design choices and things that are timeless. At the end of the day, a client loving their home is more important than any trends. Periods in time are always cycling back around to create so called “new” design trends, but let’s be real - something from your parents or grandparents home has been in style in the recent years, right?!
Here it is: The 2024 Design Trends you can expect to see.
Out with the Gray, in with the Brown
According to a recent House Beautiful survey, over 90% of respondents predict that brown will be the color of choice in 2024. We’ve started to see cool gray tones becoming less prominent over the past few years with warmer grays taking the forefront in fabrics and materials. For 2024 we will continue to see designs trending out of grays and into browns, and that includes wall paints too!
Chrome is a Classic
You’ve probably had a time in your life where you’ve said “I have to rip out these dated Chrome faucets and lights”. Guess what?! Chrome, as a finish choice, is here to stay. You’re going to start to notice more silver tones show up in furniture and fixtures that hit the market this year. Don’t be afraid!
Wallpaper Makes a Statement
Bold wallpapers aren’t just for a small powder room anymore. You’re going to start to see more rooms of the home adorned with beautiful patterns floor the ceiling. The idea that you design your home so that guests fall in love with every square inch, including staircases and foyers, is the new trend. We’re not talking just one accent wall either. From ceilings covered in wallpaper, to floor-to-ceiling murals painted on walls, wallpaper will be a go-to in 2024. (Now is the time to find a good installer!!)
Comfort and Softness
Cozy is a word you hear me use a lot. Creating a cozy corner, or a feeling of coziness in a large room helps create an inviting environment. It’s warm and welcoming. This is not only done by the right scale of pieces combined together, but also by colors and materials. Boucle is one of those materials that’s soft to the touch, visually warm, and just plain cozy - or Cozy Luxe as I like to call it.
So the trends are in, now what?! I’m sure you’re pondering how to add them into your own space. Here are some ideas for you!
Paint: I love paint because it’s fairly inexpensive, can be do-it-yourself, and it will totally transform a room. If you’re considering a great way to embrace the brown vibes, consider painting your walls. Sherwin Williams has a ton of brown paints to explore. They also have these really great peel-and-stick samples so you can try before you buy!
Mirrors and Frames: If you’re looking to add a touch of silver to your space, consider a silver framed mirror or piece of art. Mixing metals are ok as long as you’re intentional with it, so don’t get stuck on the fact that you have nothing else “silver”. Pick a style frame that works with the rest of your decor and then pick it in a silver tone. You could even cover a dining room wall in antique mirror panels for an added sparkle. Maybe it’s simple like this mirror, or you want something antiqued yet modern, or you opt for a framed gallery wall.
Wallpaper: If you’re ready for the boldness of a wallpaper, this is one design element, I highly suggest! Start small with a bathroom, or your foyer. Explore sites like Spoonflower (who’s having a 30% off sale for a few more day) and Chasing Paper for some fabulous prints and DIY options.
When it comes to designing your home, lean harder into classical design choices and things that are timeless rather than trends.
